Welcome to don't panic
where we explore and occasionally panic about the latest developments in AI and how it will shape our work, lives, and the world around us.

This newsletter is not just for nerds like us. We welcome everyone who wants to join the conversation about our future.

Am I losing my job to AI?

Human and AI working together.

No, you won’t unless you choose to live under a rock. The formula for success in any venture from now on is YOU + AI. Think of AI as an assistant that can do all the work you find soul-crushing, and you will gain a competitive edge. However, since you are not the only one who will use AI in the future, we predict an AI rat race. (You heard it here first.)

Should I panic?

No. Instead, learn new AI tricks. You can find some of them in our Don’t Panic Newsletter.

Boring

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Upload your boring document on humata.ai or genei.io, and you’ll get your personal AI that works like ChatGPT. It can extract key insights, create summaries, and answer questions. It also works with manuals, legal papers, and non-boring documents.

Should I panic?

God no. It’s a gift to humanity. At the time of writing, you can even test both platforms for free!

My kid is using ChatGPT to cheat on their school papers. What should I do?

To cheat is to be human. Instead of punishing them, reward them with ChatGPT plus, which costs $20 per month.

Rather than worrying about how our children use AI, schools should develop a new curriculum that includes AI and emphasizes critical thinking over rote memorization. Critical thinking may be the most valuable skill for the future.

This professor asked his students to use ChatGPT instead of condemning it. The results were surprising.

Child wondering

Should I panic?

No, unless you happen to be my high school history teacher who made us recite a Roman song in Latin.

How can AI assist the visually impaired in seeing?

Poem generated by AI

Here’s an exciting project from MIT alumni Ryan Mather and Zhang Kelin. Their prototype camera takes photos and feeds the images into an AI system that describes what it sees and turns it into a poem. The camera’s built-in printer then prints out the “captured poetry.” Impressive! More information can be found at https://linktr.ee/poetrycamera

At Don’t Panic, we’re hoping to collaborate with them to create a new prototype with a text-to-speech feature for the visually impaired.

Should I panic?

No, but you can help sponsor our prototype. Please contact us for more information.

A new commons sense.

Each week, we bid farewell to a universal truth challenged by AI.

This week:

Take a look at this picture from Tom’s family. The input was a blurry JPG, which he processed using the popular image upscaler Topaz Gigapixel and Adobe Neural Filters for coloring. The output was a crisp family photo that made his mum proud.

That’s it for this first newsletter.
Please do let us know what you think and Don’t Panic.
